Chapter three comes to an end and I made the most of the final day!  We are headed back to Washington for a quick six-day turn around before heading off again. So today, in celebration, I did something I really wanted to do.
I visited Highclere Castle, also known as Downton Abbey.
I’m a big fan of the show and word here is a movie is on the horizon! ¬†Our tour guide told us filming begins later this month. Seeing this beautiful castle, which is a private home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, and seeing all the rooms where filming took place was such a treat. ¬†Everything looked just like the show, only so much smaller! ¬†Amazing how cameras and camera angles can make everything look larger!
No photos allowed inside but I’m sharing the ones I took of the exterior. ¬†I even got to see the Earl and Countess, just walking around like regular folks.
My tour also took us to the village of Bampton. Bampton plays the role of the village of Downton. The strange thing is there is a village of Downton, but it wasn’t used in the series. The smaller village of Bampton was. Just one small street of Bampton, through the magic lens, becomes the village post office, St. Michael’s Church, Mrs. Crowley’s house, the hospital and the pub “The Grantham Arms”.
It was a great way to end our 31 day tour and to close Chapter Three. It seems a lifetime ago that we landed in Dublin on our first day of this stage of our Grand Adventure. We have covered a lot of territory.
So now it’s time to spend a week unpacking, repacking, checking in with family and then we head off again to begin Chapter Four – a six-week USA tour.
I hope you will continue to follow along on the journey!  So for now РCheerio Mate!
